Is Your Well Water Well Protected?

As temperatures are starting to drop, it is important that you insulate your well pipes and casing.
When pipes freeze, the flow of water is completely blocked.  As the water expands to ice, pipes can burst and causes the potential to ruin your pump deep within the ground.  This damage could be extremely expensive.  So before the sun goes down and freezing temperatures set in, be sure to insulate your pipes and casings.

If your well does not have a cover for protection or if you are simply looking for additional insulation from the cold weather, here are a few tips to keep your water flowing and your pump working properly.
  • For insulating your pipes and casing you can purchase foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation from your local home improvement store.  Secure the insulation around your pipes and casing to withstand freezing temperatures and other outdoor elements.
  • For outdoor faucets or spigots, you may also consider an outdoor faucet cover.  These foam coverings can be purchased at any home improvement store and attach firmly to your spigots to protect them from freezing.
  • Another great tip to keep your pipes from freezing, have a faucet inside of your home turned on slightly to allow a slow drip to keep some water movement within your pipes.

If you experience damages to your well or pump from frozen pipes or cold weather, call Croft Drilling Services for expert advice and emergency repairs.

Thanks for the suggestion to get an outdoor faucet cover. My parents just moved to a part of the country that gets pretty cold during the fall and winter seasons, and they are worried about protecting their water well. Along with getting a faucet cover, I'll advise them to work with a well service to help keep their well alive during the cold season.

Thanks for helping me understand that it can be expensive to repair damages because of frozen pipes. I will keep in mind to have insulation systems installed for the 8" drilled water wells we plan to get for our property. We just need to have another source of water to reduce the monthly costs we usually have, and we'll also need to stick to our budget in the future that is why preventing damages would be the best thing to do for us.

More than 23 million homes in the US utilize private wells to supply their drinking water. These wells are not subject to federal or state safety regulations, unlike public drinking water systems. They can get contaminated with a variety of contaminants and make youngsters ill. If your household consumes water from a private well, it's crucial to frequently test the water to ensure its safety. Inquire about testing if your kids drink well water at daycare, school, summer camp, or whenever your family travels.
